Making it work: How my Media Literacy project came about for EDUA 7300

The Idea      Media Literacy is quickly becoming a topic that I am passionate about. When I started thinking about my final project for EDUA 7300, I knew it would be about Media Literacy. I wanted to create something that would educate people about Media Literacy, but also be something that I could use in my high school classroom with my students.       I started out with an idea of a smartphone with apps that a person could click on and it would take them to different topics about Media Literacy, such as "What is Media Literacy?" "Fact-Checking," "Social Media," quizzes and resource articles. I wanted it to be interactive as well as informative.      I also wanted it to be a lesson that could be done in class or remotely. I also wanted it to be able to used by parents as well. I also thought of incorporating some interactive elements, such as having participants take quizzes and scroll through a fun slideshow. I really wante...

The future is now

Canva Images     Technology advances can be seen everywhere in education. New Generative AI programs, virtual reality, augmented reality, and 3D printing can all be seen in today's classrooms.  The technology of education, once a mere facilitator, now shapes how we learn, teach and interact in schools. It's redefining traditional learning methods and making new paths for educational inclusivity and future readiness (Vorobyov, 2024).            “Technology is a game-changer for education – it offers the prospect of universal access to high-quality learning experiences, and it creates fundamentally new ways of teaching,” said Dan Schwartz, dean of  Stanford Graduate School of Education  (GSE), who is also a professor of educational technology at the GSE and faculty director of the  Stanford Accelerator for Learning . “But there are a lot of ways we teach that aren’t great, and a big fear with AI in particular is that we just...

Creating a multimedia project is easier than you think

What is Multimedia?     In today's modern technology world, multimedia projects have become a great way to teach, communicate, and show off creativity. By combining text, images, audio, video, and interaction, multimedia allows people to fully engage their audience in a powerful manner.  It provides an interaction between users and digital information (tutorialspoint, n.d.).       Multimedia also refers to the uses of computer technology to create, store and experience multimedia content. Multimedia applications play a crucial role in education which range from preschool education to postgraduate students and corporate training packages (Fen, 2017).  By definition Multimedia is a representation of information in an attractive and interactive manner with the use of a combination of text, audio, video, graphics and animation. In other words we can say that Multimedia is a computerized method of presenting information combining textual data, a...

Multimedia: Mayer's Theory and Principles and putting it to work

Image
INTRODUCTION           Mass communication continues to rapidly develop both online and offline. Teachers, like myself, come from a generation that still remembers a time without internet, and we are teaching students who have grown up with nothing but internet in their lives. This means, as teachers, we have to rethink how to teach to this generation. Pencil and paper are not enough. That's where multimedia comes into play.      Multimedia learning occurs when students build mental representations from words and pictures that are presented to them (Mayer, 2003). The promise of multimedia learning is that students can learn more deeply from well-designed multimedia messages consisting of words and pictures than from more traditional modes of communication involving words alone (Mayer, 2003).       Multimedia technology has some characteristics like integration, diversity, and interaction that enable people to communicate i...
