AI & Education: Working Together
Benefits to students
There are so many benefits that AI can do to help students. Khan Academy's Khanmigo AI assistant acts as a tutor/teacher when students ask it questions. It's not a cheating tool, but instead a tool to help the student learn and find the answer (Khan, 2023).
AI systems can “gauge a student’s learning style and pre-existing knowledge to deliver customized support and instruction," Lynch stated (University of San Diego).
AI algorithms can analyze student data and adapt to their learning styles, providing feedback and recommendations that are tailored to their individual needs and abilities. This can help to keep students engaged and motivated and can lead to improved academic performance (Melo, 2023).
A program like Perplexity can help students learn differences in governments, and then students can dive further and ask the program to provide a list of advantages and disadvantages (Huynh, 2023). Perplexity-generated text is produced from a synthesis of various articles and videos online. Students can use this information as brief introductory text (Huynh, 2023).
Bernard Marr explains that AI tools can enhance inclusion and universal access to education in a number of ways, including:
- Helping to “make global classrooms available to all, including those who speak different languages or who might have visual or hearing impairments”
- Creating access for “students who might not be able to attend school due to illness”
- Better serving “students who require learning at a different level or on a particular subject that isn’t available in their own school”
Benefits for Teachers
Yes, all English teachers are freaking out because they think students are going to jump onto ChatGPT and write their essays. Instead, turn the tables and teach students how to responsible use AI.
Instead of having students write an essay about a book, have the students type that essay's prompt into ChatGPT. Then make the students become the teacher by getting into groups and reading the ChatGPT responses and assess them using a rubric provided by the teacher. The students should mark up ChatGPT's response and come up with constructive feedback that they can deliver in their next prompt. By taking on the role of an editor, students can actively develop a better understanding of what makes an essay successful (Leonard, 2023).
As teachers we need to get creative in using AI and embrace it, not shun it. AI can be time-saving tool for teachers. AI technology can help teachers with grading, making lesson plans, providing data, and giving feedback on course quality (University of San Diego).
By incorporating AI into the curriculum, teachers can help students develop a critical perspective on this technology, and prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of the digital age (Melo, 2023).
Teachers who are not familiar with AI may find it difficult to integrate this technology into their teaching practices, and they may need support and training to get started (Melo, 2023). Training sessions focused on using AI to generate a lesson, unit, or assessment often fail to incorporate a strong pedagogical foundation. Instead of showing teachers how to copy and paste a content standard into an AI tool, professional learning can focus on how these tools can help teachers bring a higher level of intentionality to their design work, even if they are using an adopted curriculum (Tucker, 2024).
The goal is to help teachers understand how AI can help them design learning experiences for a diverse group of students more effectively and efficiently, and in a fraction of the time it took before AI (Tucker, 2024).
Best Practices for incorporating AI into the classroom:
1. Partner with a reliable AI provider - This can be a technology company, a local university, or a non-profit organization that specializes in AI education. The right partner can provide support, training, and guidance to help teachers effectively incorporate AI into their teaching practices.
2. Start small - Rather than trying to implement AI across the entire curriculum, it is recommended that teachers start small and work their way up. This allows teachers to gain experience with the technology, build confidence, and refine their teaching practices over time.
3. Foster ethical and critical thinking - Teachers should encourage students to think critically about the ethical implications of AI and to consider the potential consequences of its widespread use. This can help students become responsible and informed digital citizens who are equipped to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the digital age.
(Melo, 2023).

7 EDUCATION TOOLS THAT WORK
Here are seven AI-powered tools that will help teachers with personalized learning that enables them to become more efficient and save time that can then be spent with students.
1. AudioPen: This is an AI-powered web app that you can use on your computer or phone. The app takes your words and enhances them as it generates the text, which you can edit as needed.
2. Canva Magic Write: Canva now offers an AI text-to-image generator called Magic Write, which can inspire creativity in writing. It provides ideas, helps with brainstorming, and supports lesson planning, making it a useful tool for educators for creating a presentation or other graphic for classroom use. Magic Write can assist with many writing tasks that educators may have by analyzing the word prompts and then helping with brainstorming, creating an outline, writing lesson plans, or generating a visually engaging presentation in far less time.
3. Curipod: This website enables teachers to create interactive lessons in minutes using AI. Students can explore various topics, and the AI functionality helps generate customized lessons tailored to their learning needs. Teachers simply type in a topic, and a ready-to-run lesson is generated with text, images, and activities such as polls, open-ended responses, word clouds, and more. There are even activities to build in that focus on SEL check-ins.
4. Eduaide.Ai: This is an AI-assisted lesson-development tool that provides educators with more than 100 resource types to choose from to create high-quality instructional materials. It offers the ability to translate the generated content into more than 15 languages instantly. Educators can generate a syllabus, create discussion prompts, use the “teaching assistant” for help with creating individualized education program plans, write emails, or even compile a list of accommodations for students. Eduaide.AI has a content generator, teaching assistant, feedback bot, free-form chat, and assessment builder.
5. OpenAI: The recently released Teaching with AI guide for teachers was created to help educators use ChatGPT in their classroom. The guide comes with several suggested prompts and includes explanations that clarify exactly how ChatGPT works and what its limitations are, and it provides reminders of the importance of verifying information and checking for bias. With ChatGPT 4, which is a paid version, there is greater accuracy and reliability of information than with the original version.
6. Quizizz: With Quizizz, teachers can design quizzes that will create a personalized learning path based on each student’s responses. Teachers can also create lessons with Quizizz, which now has an AI enhancement that can adjust question difficulty, check grammar, and redesign questions to reflect real-world scenarios, with more features on the way.
7. Slidesgo: This tool provides access to free templates via Google Slides and now has the AI Presentation Maker. With this new functionality, presentations can be created within minutes. Simply choose a topic; select a tone such as casual, creative, or professional; make changes; and download your presentation. A time-saver for sure!

Hey Melissa,
ReplyDeleteYour blog was filled with grea information. I like that you are optimist to new technology because not a lot of teachers are. Do you find that being optimistic about it facilitates the integration of technology into the classrooms? I agree that we should work with technology instead of against it. Helping students grow 21st century skills is crucial since everything is so digital now. They are still learning the same things, but just going about them through a digital approach. You also provided a good example of how to utilize the tools. You mentioned that instead of asking them to write something they could easily get an answer to, the teacher takes on a different approach and allows the student to be in charge of their learning.
I want to save this blog post and have it forever because it has so much useful information. All the resources you provided have the potential of enhancing classrooms. Great job finding your own resources and creating a blog post that can help many who may not know where to start!
